It took several patches and a patch from Nvidia before I could play it, and my computer easily clears the minimum requirements. “I’ve written about this before, but it bears repeating: the launch of Red Dead Redemption 2The PC port was an absolute disaster. It was their last test, the last frontier to conquer. Rockstar’s PC ports have improved in recent years, but Red Dead Redemption 2 was a chance to accomplish two things at once: finally bringing a revered franchise to PC and proving that they could get their PC versions the first time, without needing multiple patches or updates.
It’s also one of the only Rockstar games that has never been released on PC, and it’s unlikely, as Rockstar has said that optimizing the game’s engine will be too much work. Ten years after, Red Dead Redemption, especially its ending, is still Rockstar’s best hour. But these small victories, no matter how simple, count and are worth fighting for. If there is one thing that Red Dead Redemption 2 shared with his predecessor is the conviction that each victory, each sacrifice, is temporary. He can run away from him, like his father did, but eventually he will catch up with him. The problem was the system he works for, and it’s something Jack Marston could never destroy. Ross was an errand boy sent to collect an invoice. What Jack doesn’t see – can’t see – is that Edgar Ross is not his enemy. But what his sacrifice buys is temporary, and a few years later his son throws him out for a misguided attempt at revenge on an old man. He’s got to be destroyed, and he knows it, so he’s going on his own terms. Civilization is coming, and there is no place for men like John Marston.
His death is the death of the Wild West itself, not only in the reality of the game world, but as an idea. As the last remaining member of Dutch Van der Linde’s gang, his death resolves the meta-plot that the game has kept the logs running and the discussions running in the background. But his sacrifice is not the death of one man. He atones and offers his family a chance for a new life. John’s death is sad, but it is also a moment of triumph.
He comes out of his barn in a hail of gunfire, like Butch and Sundance, but no joke. John Marston dies at the end of Red Dead Redemption.
